Technology is such a big part of our lives now at days, that we can't help our little ones to be exposed to all sorts of gadgets; many of which they've gotten as gifts on the past Holiday season I am sure. A tablet, a new smart phone, mp3 players, laptops, or even PCs. One of the biggest concerns we've had, and we've been thinking about, is the inappropriate access to the internet that kids may end up exposed to. At a normal every-day browse online, you can bump into numerous Adult sites just by accident, not to count all the other sites that may lead to identity theft and scams. Therefore, at some point, even if we have the confidence of raising our kids in an age appropriate way, we can't really help to protect them 24/7 – or can we? Let me tell you that technology can be used in advantages too, with the purpose of helping ease our mind of such fears, and even contribute to a healthier well-being of our little ones.

I was recently introduced to The Wifi Boss, which is a router-based internet management solution. We were invited to try out their product with the purpose of writing an honest opinion about it, and sharing our experience with all of our wonderful and valued readers.

Background

The Wifi Boss was created out of the struggle some parents were having with their children's countless hours using the internet, and the need to keep them from adult websites. After finding out his daughter was staying up late chatting with her friends, the problem became personal for Mr. Soave, creator of The Wifi Boss. He did not hesitate to take control over his Internet connection by working on a solution that both him and his fellow parents were eagerly looking for.

Though we do not have kids yet, we do babysit my niece every now and then. She is old enough to have at least 3 internet connecting devices in her backpack every time she comes to stay with us. Therefore, it does become a concern to think she might end up staying up later than she should when she stays over, since lately it is something she has been doing at her home. We use the internet for watching TV, staying connected with the family, working, research, among other things, and we can't afford to disconnected the Internet while she is here, nor do I feel it is fair to take away her devices. I think The Wifi Boss couldn't have come in a better time. Now we can feel confident that she will have no choice but to go to sleep when she should.

Tablet and phone not included

I have never felt comfortable with being all over the place like a hawk when the kids are using the internet. I always like to feel I am giving them some freedom to be mature and responsible enough to take the right decisions while online. However, I have learned throughout my 17 years of surfing the web, that it is very easy to fall into the traps of inappropriate websites even when you are not even searching for anything of that sort. It is even surprising how easy it is to fall into a website that it's mere purpose is to steal your information once you fall to open a particular link. Lucky for us, by connecting to the web through The Wifi Boss, those devices should be protected from such invasions thus giving us some peace of mind. The end result; the reward of giving the kids their own safe space while they are learning and exploring the web.

What it does and what it comes with

The Wifi Boss connects to your main router through an Ethernet cable that is included with the device. Once you plug it to the electrical outlet, the device should be on, and once connected to the main router, it is technically up and ready to use. You have to open an account with The Wifi Boss to get your device registered, and get your password. It is also important to install the App, since this is what is going to allow you to control the time devices have access to your internet connection. Once you have your account and password, you can start connecting your chosen devices to The Wifi Boss. It is important that the devices you are using to control The Wifi Boss have updated operating system. It is my understanding that if you are using The Wifi Boss app on an Apple device, your iOS (Apple Operating System) has to be version 8 and up. If you are using an android device, it won't work with versions 4.1.2 or older. I tried to use the app on my phone, which is about a year old, and it did not work, because I had android 4.1.2. However, I installed the app on another device that has android 5.1.1 and it works just fine. Anything in between, I wouldn't be able to tell you

. Please do know that the devices connected to the internet through The Wifi Boss, have no problems, because all they are doing is connecting to a controlled internet connection. It is the device controlling The Wifi Boss, the one which should have the described updated operating system. So if your little ones are using your old tablets, that should be okay. If you have any questions about any other operating system, do not hesitate to contact The Wifi Boss. They will be more than happy to respond and know of your interest towards this great device.

What I liked

Aside of knowing that I can set the times where the internet connection will turn off and back on automatically for when my niece comes visit, and for when we have kids feel confident while homeschooling, there were other perks I liked that I hadn't thought about. Since I use social media all the time for work and for communication with my family, I tend to mute my phone during the night. Unfortunately I tend to forget to activate the sound on my phone in the morning, and therefore I miss a few important calls from family and friends that call early. I don't like going through this issue, but I think it is worse to wake up in the middle of the night after a notification from instagram or twitter. I figured that by turning data off, and connecting through The Wifi Boss, I can program my internet to go off by 11pm and back on by 7am, allowing me to receive calls, and still get all the notifications I need but until after I wake up. I thought that was brilliant. Not only does The Wifi Boss works for kids, but if you are creative enough, you can also take advantages of the uses it has. It is very easy to change the times devices are online through the app. This makes it easier to also be able to manipulate those times if you just happened to ground your kids with no internet access. You just turn off the connectivity on The Wifi Boss, while you can still work online by staying connected to the normal router.

Another wonderful thing I found was the ability to speed up my connection. Since we all have more than one device at home that is connected to the web at the same time, my laptop ends up being the weak link and ends up with the slowest connection making it fall a few times, specially at night, when there are more people at home. I found out that by connecting to The Wifi Boss, my connection became faster, since noone else was connected to the device at the time I tried it. I would say that it is a Win-Win for me!

You can edit the name of your device for ease of identification, and the clock icon leads to connectivity times.

I was curious about the ability to block additional websites on our own, considering that cyber-bulling is still something that is happening, and it can happen in any type of website. I asked if it was possible to control other websites on our end and the answer was that by installing open DNS software, you are able to block additional websites. However, you do have to install this additional software. Once installed, The Wifi Boss staff will be more than happy to assist you in setting it up with The Wifi Boss router.

Areas for improvement

In the time I have had this device and used it, I haven't had any significant issues with it. It was very easy to install, and I was sent instructions to my email after registration so that I knew what to do once I got the device. Though I have always been very savvy with gadgets, following instructions was very straight forward. The information was clear and easy to read. Once you have the device up and running, there is not much of a complication. Once you set it up, if you have no changes to your configuration, you are pretty much done. You just change the password of your original router so that the devices require it; then connect the chosen devices to The Wifi Boss, and you are pretty much done. You can see the electronic devices connected to The Wifi Boss through the app. I will keep on using this device, and if anything comes up in the future that I might consider relevant, I will update this section and add it here. However, as far as I am concerned, we are very happy with The Wifi Boss. According to my husband, this is a dream come true. To me, it's like someone read our minds and created this magnificent revolutionary device that will bring much more quality of time with the family in the enjoyment of technology without the negative influence or abuse.

Overall, we enjoy the usefulness of The Wifi Boss, and I am eager to find out other creative uses for us as well. Sometimes, even if you are an adult, you might not want to bump into unrelated websites while doing a thorough search. I know I would feel more comfortable navigating the web while having kids playing behind me in the same room, without exposing them to something not appropriate for their age. I have learned that this also has other advantages. Whenever I feel with some insomnia and I see my tablet next to my bed, I just grab it and start playing games or can't help working some more. However, if I am without the internet access, even though I can go back to the old router, it kind of forces me a little to try to go to sleep, instead of just browsing the web and probably ending up awake longer than I would have if I hadn't grabbed my device.

Hoy en día, la tecnología forma parte importante de nuestras vidas, y es difícil considerar que con tantos aparatos electrónicos, nuestros niños puedan estar expuestos a peligros en la web. Con las pasadas fiestas navideñas, estoy casi segura que algunos pequeñines recibieron nuevos aparatos como reproductores de mp3, teléfonos inteligentes (Smart Phones), Tablets, ordenadores portátiles (Laptops), o Computadoras Personales. Una de las preocupaciones más grandes que hemos tenido, las cuales han invadido nuestros pensamientos recientemente, es lo peligroso y fácil que es para los pequeñines terminar en alguna página web inadecuada para su edad. Si para uno como adulto, nos toma por sorpresa, para un pequeñín es de lo más peligroso. No solo por el tipo de contenido, sino por los riesgos que puede envolver esa página, ya sea con rastreadores que buscan robar los datos personales, viruses y otro tipo de riesgos a los que puedan estar expuestos. Por lo tanto, aún y cuando tengamos la confianza de haber criado a nuestros hijos bien y encaminarlos con buenos ejemplos, no podemos estar pegados a lo que ven en el ciberespacio las 24 horas del día-- o si? Déjenme decirles que la tecnología puede ser productiva tanto como contra productiva, pero está en nuestras manos hacer algo al respecto, y es por ello que estoy muy feliz de presentarles este producto que siento yo, va a ser de su interés, sobretodo si tienen pequeñines en casa con aparatos nuevos.

Recientemente me presentaron a "The Wifi Boss", el cual es un router que te ayuda a controlar el acceso a la conexión de Internet que los pequeñines tienen desde tu hogar. Recibimos la cordial invitación a probar el producto con el propósito de escribir nuestra honesta opinión en cuanto a nuestra experiencia con este dispositivo. Es por ello que estamos escribiendo esta publicación, para poder compartirles nuestro punto de vista en cuanto el uso de "The Wifi Boss".

Acerca de el producto

"The Wifi Boss" fue creado por la necesidad que algunos padres de familia tuviesen ante ciertos problemas que los nuevos aparatos de uso diario estaban causando para sus pequeñines. Entre estos; el acceso inadecuado a páginas no aptas para la edad de los niños, y las innumerables horas que los pequeñines estaban pasando conectados al Internet. Al descubrir que su hija permanecía despierta por horas durante las noches chateando con sus amigas, la búsqueda de una solución se convirtió en una meta personal para el Sr. Soave, creador de "The Wifi Boss". Fue así que aunado a otros padres de familia, tomó cartas en el asunto, brindando este dispositivo como una solución a los problemas que acabamos de describir.

Aunque no tenemos hijos de momento, si nos toca echar la mano cuidando a nuestros sobrinos de vez en cuando. Cuando mi sobrina de 10 años viene a quedarse con nosotros, siempre llega cargada de sus aparatos electrónicos como su reproductor mp3, su tabla, y por supuesto que su teléfono celular (Smart Phone). Por lo tanto, crece en nosotros la preocupación de que no se irá a dormir a la hora indicada, ya que es algo que desafortunadamente ha estado haciendo en su propia casa recientemente. También existe el temor de que terminase en páginas que no son aptas para su edad, y eso podría terminar en una situación muy incomoda ante sus padres y nosotros por ser quienes estamos a cargo bajo este techo.

Sería imposible cortar el acceso al Internet en la casa, debido a que la usamos para todo. Vemos televisión vía Web, estamos en contacto con la familia, e incluso parte de nuestro trabajo es en línea. También me parecería muy injusto no dejarle conectarse a el Internet solo por estos temores, ya que parte de la vida de los niños hoy en día también está ligada a la Web. Muchos de sus trabajos escolares son vía Web y el estar desconectados podría afectarles. De igual forma no me parecería lógico confiscar los aparatos a cierta hora, y sé que son otros tiempos, sin embargo cuando no son tus hijos hay una delicada línea que uno evita cruzar. Afortunadamente para nosotros "The Wifi Boss" no pudo haber llegado en momento más oportuno. Siempre me he sentido incómoda de andar de metiche viendo lo que los niños andan haciendo en línea. Yo tuve la dicha de tener la confianza de mi madre, y me gustaría brindarle a los peques de la familia la misma confianza. Pero hay veces en las cuales ya no depende de ellos ni está en manos de uno, esto puede volverse algo frustrante. Me da gusto decir que mientras "The Wifi Boss" esté controlando la conectividad a los dispositivos electrónicos que los peques usen, estaremos con mejor tranquilidad mientras exploran la Web.

Que es y lo que incluye

Al ordenar "The Wifi Boss" uno abre una cuenta para que cuando el aparato llegue a nuestro hogar, ya esté listo para su uso en forma casi inmediata."The Wifi Boss" es técnicamente un router el cual uno conecta a el router principal através de un cable Ethernet que viene incluido con el dispositivo. Una vez conectado a la electricidad, el dispositivo muestra estar encendido através de luces que se encienden como lo hacen todos los aparatos de este tipo y prácticamente está listo para usarse. Los datos de usuario y contraseña normalmente se reciben al abrir la cuenta. Una vez conectado el dispositivo electrónico a "The Wifi Boss", queda bajo el control que uno le indique a este router vía la aplicación. A continuación, uno deberá descargar la aplicación en algún dispositivo el cual el adulto controlará. La aplicación no tiene que ser descargada en todos los aparatos que estarán conectados al router, solo deberá estar en el o los dispositivos que uno usará para programar "The Wifi Boss".

En cuanto a la aplicación, si usa dispositivos con sistema operativo apple (iOS), estos deberán tener las versiones de 8.0 a la más actual. Si el dispositivo que usará con la aplicación es android, he notado que no funciona si su sistema operativo android es 4.1.2 y anteriores. Intentamos instalar la aplicación en una versión de android más reciente (5.1.1) y funcionó a la perfección. Los aparatos que se conectarán a "The Wifi Boss" no tienen que ser necesariamente alguna de estas versiones que hemos descrito ya que estas usan el mismo proceso de conexión tal cual hicieran con cualquier otro router. Así que si su pequeñín está usando su vieja tabla o computadora, conectarse a la red mediante "The Wifi Boss" no debe brindarle problemas en cuanto a sistemas operativos.

Beneficios? Como ya he mencionado, controlar las horas en las que uno se conecta a la red sin afectar otros dispositivos que también usan el Internet en su hogar. Bloquear sitios no aptos para menores, o que intentan robarle su información personal y causarle daño mediante fraudes electrónicos.

Lo que he disfrutado

Aparte de saber que puedo programar el tiempo en el cual ciertos aparatos están conectados a la red o no, sobretodo cuando andamos de niñeros, encontré otros beneficios para mi como adulto. Desde que hago uso de las redes sociales como parte de mi trabajo, es imposible pasar una noche entera sin alguna notificación. Lo lógico es poner el teléfono sin sonido. Sin embargo ocasionalmente olvido activar el sonido nuevamente, lo cual ocasiona que pierda llamadas que a veces mortifican a mis familiares. No había encontrado solución a esto, hasta que comenzamos a usar "The Wifi Boss". Ahora puedo programar mi teléfono por la noche a "Sin Datos" para que solo el teléfono suene en caso de emergencia, y programando "The Wifi Boss" a estar desconectado de la red de las 11pm a las 7am, logro tener paz y tranquilidad sin la preocupación de no estar indispuesta para la familia.

Esto también me ha ayudado en noches de insomnio, ya que al no poder dormir, en vez de agarrar mi tablet, sabiendo que no tendrá acceso a Internet en este horario, me forzará a tratar de dormir a mejor tiempo que si tomara el dispositivo y me pusiera a trabajar o jugar algún Video juego. Es muy fácil manipular la programación de tiempos y los dispositivos afectados por estos cambios gracias a la aplicación.

Uno puede ver los dispositivos conectados a The Wifi Boss, y editar los horarios de conexión simple y sencillo.

Ahora sí que me he sentido con más control sobre mi conexión a la red. También he notado que, cuando todo mundo en mi casa está conectado a todos sus dispositivos al mismo tiempo; televisores, computadoras, laptops, celulares, tablas, y demás, mi laptop es el punto débil y siempre termino con problemas de conectividad. Bueno pues, el hecho de cambiar de router a usar "The Wifi Boss" cuando mi laptop se ha alentado, debido a que solo yo estaba conectada en ese momento, el problema desapareció. Nunca me imaginé que el simple hecho de estar todos conectados a un router haría mi dispositivo más lento y que la solución estaría en conectarme al otro router aunque fuese la misma conexión de Internet. Así que con un poquito de creatividad, no dudo que habrá otros usos y aplicaciones para este aparato.

Es fácil editar el horario de el dispositivo para que no esté conectado a la red cuando uno elige.

Pregunté a mi contacto en "The Wifi Boss" si eventualmente uno puede controlar y agregar que páginas quedan bloqueadas para evitar acceso a otras páginas que, aunque aceptables para los menores, pueda eventualmente causar un problema. Después de todo, el Cyber-bulling aún es tema de preocupación en el ciberespacio, y los jóvenes pueden hacer esto en cualquier sitio Web. La respuesta fue que mientras uno tenga instalado un programa de DNS público o abierto (Open DNS), ellos pueden ayudarnos a programar este software con "The Wifi Boss" y en ese respecto poder agregar sitios Web a la lista bloqueada. Poder controlar algunos dispositivos conectados a "The Wifi Boss" es genial, y no afecta para nada el uso de la conexión de Internet para todos en nuestro hogar. Mi suegro, quien trabaja en la industria de programación, a veces se la pasa trabajando toda la noche. En su caso, el puede permanecer conectado al router normal, y en ningún momento sería afectado por movimientos que yo pueda hacer a la programación de conectividad mediante "The Wifi Boss". Incluso si los demás permanecemos conectados a "The Wifi Boss", su conexión a el router normal podría terminar siendo más rápida y efectiva para su trabajo. Yo diría que todos salimos ganando con este fantástico y práctico aparato.

En el tiempo que he tenido y usado "The Wifi Boss", no he encontrado problema alguno que amerite mencionar. Es muy fácil abrir la cuenta, instalar el aparato, y configurar la aplicación. Aún así uno recibe un manual en formato PDF en caso de ser necesario para instalar el equipo. La información en estas instrucciones es clara y fácil de leer. No me tomó más de 5 minutos en instalar y conectar mis dispositivos a "The Wifi Boss" y disfrutar de los beneficios de tener este revolucionario router. Esta sección podría ser actualizada a futuro en caso de encontrar algún problema que sea necesario mencionar, pero fuera de ahí, estoy muy feliz de contar con "The Wifi Boss" en mi hogar.

En general, he disfrutado de la tranquilidad que este dispositivo brindará a nuestra familia, y estoy ansiosa por descubrir otros usos creativos de los cuales podré tomar ventaja. Supongo que al navegar por la red, puedo sentirme más segura que no me toparé con sitios que intentan robar mi información mediante trackers y habrá menos spam o basura en mis correos electrónicos mientras los accese en dispositivos conectados a "The Wifi Boss".
